Documents you need
To apply for a Florida learner license and take the Class E Knowledge Exam, bring original documents, not copies.
- Proof of identity such as a certified birth certificate or a valid passport.
- Proof of your Social Security number.
- Two proofs of Florida residency such as a utility bill, lease or bank statement showing your address.
First-time drivers
If this is your first license, you must complete the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course before the exam. Your completion is reported to the state electronically.
Applicants under 18
Drivers under 18 also need a parent or guardian to sign the application, either in person or on a notarized form. Under the graduated licensing program, teens hold a learner license for a set period with a clean record before the full Class E license.
Before you go
Check your local DHSMV or tax collector office for current document requirements and whether an appointment is needed, then study until you are passing practice tests comfortably.
