50 questions, 40 to pass

The Florida Class E Knowledge Exam has 50 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 40 correct answers, a score of 80 percent, to pass. Miss 11 or more and you will need to retake the test.

What the questions cover

Questions are drawn from road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, safe driving, and fines and penalties. No single topic dominates, so it pays to study all of them rather than betting on one area.

What if you fail?

Florida lets you retake the knowledge exam. Depending on where you test, a retake may involve a short waiting period and a small fee. The surest way to avoid a retake is to practice until you clear 80 percent every time before you go.

Take your time

The exam is not heavily timed for most test takers, so read each question carefully. Many missed questions come from rushing rather than not knowing the material.
