Why road signs matter
Road signs are among the most common questions on the Florida Class E Knowledge Exam. The good news: once you learn how sign shapes and colors work, many answers become automatic.
Sign shapes
- Octagon always means stop.
- Triangle (upside down) means yield.
- Diamond warns of hazards ahead.
- Pentagon marks a school zone or school crossing.
- Rectangle gives regulatory or guide information.
Sign colors
- Red means stop, yield or prohibition.
- Yellow is a general warning.
- Orange means construction and road work.
- Green shows directions and distances.
- Blue marks driver services such as gas and food.
Study tip
Practice identifying signs by shape and color alone. On the exam you may see a sign with no words, and knowing the shape and color will still give you the answer.
